On Saturday the 4th and Sunday the 5th of June is the Comicfestival Dordrecht, Holland. The Comicfestival 'Stripfestijn' in Dordrecht is an every two year festival dominated by small-press with expositions, movies, music, a workshop and a comicfair.

The comicfair is only on Sunday June 5 from 10:00 till 18:00 at the Scheffersplein and at the Voorstraat. During the comicfestival Dordrecht there will traditionally be many comic artists present from all over Europe.
The opening of the festival takes place in atelier Augustijn, Wijnstraat 141 on Friday the 3rd of June at 18:00 during the opening of the Martin Lodewijk retrospective exposition.

The comicfair is only on Sunday June 5! from 10:00 till 18:00
The comicfair, with many signing comic artists, will be held at the Scheffersplein and at the Voorstraat in the centre of Dordrecht.
At the comicfair there is a podium which stages live music (The Heights with Marc van der Holst and Lost Lovers feat. Robert van der Kroft), a comic-auction by Het Stripschap and a comic and arts related auction by Zone5300 (all on June 5). The websites www.stripschap.nl and www.zone5300.nl will keep you informed of the items which will be auctioned.
Publisher Bries will present 5 new albums al the comicfair. There will be several comic artist present at the Bries stand for a signing session. The new albums are:

What great news that is! For a lousy 7 and a half euro that crazy comic album can be yours! Start running right now to your nearest comic store and buy this KAASHELD [CHEESE-HERO] album! At 313 (Voorstraat 313) Lamelos will also be having an exposition from June 4 till June 30 2005 contributed to this hero of the Dutch nation! During the opening of this exposition the new Lamelos comic album will be presented.
The first in line (issue #0) of a new periodically comic magazine De Lijn [The Line] will be presented at the comicfair in Dordrecht after nearly a year of preparations. At the comcifair this first issue will be available at the stand of the publisher. Afterwards the first issue will also be availbale in several comic stores .
De Lijn is characterised by changing theme and title every single number; the theme of the first issue is 'death'. Our objective is to bring together young comic artists. The first issue introduces this underlaying concept to the audience.
In this issue you will find three 10-page stories with the theme 'death'. 'Balance and Mischief' drawn by Charles Guthrie and Edwin Rhemrev, written by Rutger Ockhorst. René van Densen wrote and drawn 'Reaper Baby'. Stephan Brusche has drawn the third story, 'Undercover', on a scenario by Johan de Rooij.
Besides that 'De Dode Lijn' also contains al lot of humor: cartoons and comics by D!o, David de Rooij, Patrick Schoenmaker and Nick Willemse. The cover is by Rutger Ockhorst. Issue #1 will be available at the Haarlemse Stripdagen in 2006 (with a small reservation).

Utrechts beeldblad [image-zine] De Inktpot will present its newest issue #6 at the comicfair at June 5. The theme of this issue is 'travelling in Utrecht'. With comics from the attending artists at the comicfair (those are mentioned within a few lines) and also Jos Collignon, Jean-Marc van Tol and Brigida Almeida. Cover by illustrator Tom Eyzenbach.

A short briefing of the activities of the Don Lawrence Collection at the comicfair:
• Presentation Legacy SE: In a beautiful box lies the Don Lawrence -the legacy- Storm album, a portfolio of all the images from the album completed with six extra illustrations and a original sketch which you can personally choose. Only 50 boxes will be available (prices as from 750 euro).
• Presentation new Trigië comic album 'De dubbelganger'.
• Comic artists Dick Heins (Mooie Keetje, Babeteam, Napoleon) will be signing at our stand.
Publication of the first comic album of “Arch. Maaik, eerste voorontwerp”, a daily comic strip about architecture and constructing. “Arch.Maaik” is about the life of an architect named Archibald. This comic is the only daily architecture comic drawn by an architect in the world. The comic is meant to promote architecture, to bring the discussion about architecture to life and to make architecture more accessible for everyone.
This first book selects 180 strips from the last two years and will be the first in a long series. The auteur Mike Hermans himself is the publisher and the comic album is being distributed to several countries. As from May 2005 you can find this album in comicbook stores, (literary) book stores and artbook stores. It's also available at the website of the artist: www.maaik.com. Maaik will attent at the comicfair on Sunday June 5 for a signing session.
This comic is currently published in 10 different countries in several architecture and construction magazines. It is being promoted by architecture organisations and it's very well received by the audience of architects, professionals in constructing and people who have nothing to do with architecture. In Belgium the comic is published in “Ik Ga Bouwen” and “de Architect”.

Also present at the comicfair on June 5 is the independent comic publiser Koper comics. Koper comics are Eelco Koper and Bart van Schaik. Together the draw and write the comics Powerbeast, Powerbeast dagboek [diary] and their own diary comic Koper.
Koper comics will attent at the comicfair with the newest issue of the Powerbeast dagboek series and of course with new printings of sold out issues. And Koper comics will bring a special beer Zuiphuis pilsener with them, especially for this day.
Besides the beer and the comics they will also try to re-introduce their own artboards.

From very early on Hans could just not stop drawing and painting; during his whole period in school this has left its tracks. In spite of his passion for drawing and painting Hans did decide to follow an education in fysiotherapy. Hans did not finish it. Afterwards he did a number of professions. One of them was a job as a clerk at several courts. The love of drawing and painting always remained present. Meanwhile he joined the art painters association in Maarssen.
Nowadays he has had many expositions in several countries. And in 2005 he will have an exposition in Monterey, Californië… The subjects that interest Hans speak for itself and are situated in sunny (French) regions, in almost forgotten times. You will also find history in his art. And cars. Of course. His sometimes bizarre fantasies is being expressed in one-page-comics. He generally works with crayons that can endlessly stand the test of time.

Several artists conquer the podium at their very own way. Steven Degryse critises the whole round world with his cartoon Lectrr. Hanco Kolk shows us, with his comic S1ngle, which dilemmas a vacation van bring for a comic character and Hanco will also show the audience that drawing comics is reserved to gods only with his colegeau artist Kees de Boer in ‘the miraculous artist’.
Jeroen de Leijer and Frans van der Meer are the puppeteers of The Eefje Wentelteefje Road Show. This is a 5 meter long installation in which Eefje Wentelteefje will live all kind of bizar adventures with Ferry van de Zaande, her mother, Jan-Jaap-Karel-Kees and many others. All of this will be supported by jingles, videoclips and housebeats and the participation of the public will not be shuned. In short, Strips ON Stage promises to be a true happening.

The lots that will be auctioned can be seen in advance from 13:00 till 14:00 uur at the infostand of Stripwinkel Sjors [comicstore Sjors], or at Baloe Beer bar-restaurant if it rains.
This first auction sale organized by 'het Stripschap' at the comicfestival Dordrecht gives you a very varied choice of items. For initial collectors, smart amateurs, fans of Bommel, collectors of original drawings and people who like curiosities only, each and everyone will find something suitability here.
To give you an impression, here are some examples:
• An almost complete collection of the Tom Poes weekly magazine - the famous magazine by Marten Toonder, which originally did appear in 1947 till 1951. This collection only misses two issues in total.
• An image from the Tom Poes weekly magazine, 1948.
• Other original pages: 'Sigmund' and 'het redaktiestripje' by Peter de Wit, 'Willems Wereld' by Aloys Oosterwijk and 'De Muziekbuurters' by Ben Westervoorde.
• A signed reproduction of a Storm page out of 'De terugkeer van de rode prins' by Don Lawrence on aluminium.

Het Stripschap will organise De Stripdagen at the end of this year. This is the biggest yearly comic and strip convention in Holland for the last 35 years. Where and when this will be, will be announced very shortly by Het Stripschap. During 'De Stripdagen' the annual 'Stripschapprijzen' presentation will be held.

There also is a special award ceremony at the comicfestival Stripfestijn!
At 11:50 Jean-Marc van Tol (Fokke & Sukke) will be given the Clickburg Webcomic Award (Clickie) at the podium at the comicfair (June 5) for his comiclog Poepoe.nl. His comiclog has won the award for best online gagstrip. The award is an initiative from the Clickburg foundation, which sets to promote the medium webcomics in Holland as its goal. Jean-Marc van Tol will receive the award form René van Densen (Stichting Clickburg) and president of the jury Jeroen Mirck (Comicbase.nl).
From the jury: Last year many Dutch comic artists started a daily webcomic, but nobody gave it such a multi-purpose interpretation as Van Tol did. The artist of Fokke & Sukke has put all his conventions overboard and has given the medium of webcomics a new, fresh impulse.

'Een gelukkige hand' is partly a documentary on the life of the comic an cartoon artist Peter van Straaten and partly a fictitious history which is based on the Agnes character of Peter van Straaten.
The film takes the works of Peter van Straaten and the manner to which he exposes the interhuman exchanges and the happiness and misfortune as a starting point. Which has its effect in: the married life, work, the political life, the love between parents and children.
The documentary, the drawings and the drama are tangled up in an organic way. In the documentary part of the film we see the artist Peter van Straaten who is followed closely in the Netherlands and Italy. Here we can also see his drawings and cartoons. The drama part is a fictitious history in which Agnes is personified by the actress Renee Fokker.

The two cinemathographic meetings will be preceded at 21:00 by a talk by Pieter Sandijk, specialist in underground comics. Pieter did also have an underground comics exposition at the Comic festival in 2003 at the CBK [the Center for Visual arts].
Last year the film American Splendor had received a nomination with the Oscars for best scenario and it had won the price of cinematographic critics in Cannes.
American Splendor is not a simple comic adaption. This film of Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini balances between the various genres and describes the life of Harvey Pekar, a completely ordinary man who takes his life as a starting point to make a comic strip. The camera and art-direction accurately follows the esthetics of comics and sometimes the actors yield their places to the real characters whom they incarnate. This film, which received in the FIPRESCI price of international movie criticics in Cannes, proofs it: with a little imagination it is possible to make a history of heroship out of every single life.

Parking:
As the motor vehicle traffic is restricted in the downtown area of Dordrecht and because of its many one-way roads, it is preferable to park your car in one of the multistorey parking lots of the city. Or to use the carpark located behind 'Energiehuis' (close to the mill, at top right only just not on the citymap). You can station your car for free at the carpark of 'Energiehuis'. From here on you can take the bus (line 20/20P) to the downtown area (that will cost you only a bus ticket).
The routes towards the multistorey parking lots, and the numbers of still available parking spaces are clearly indicated along side the roads in downtown Dordrecht. Click here for the opening hours and the tariffs (that's the website of the city of Dordrecht).
Public transport:
This is also a very handy possibility since you can easily go to the town of Dordrecht by train or bus. From central station it will take you about ten to fifteen minutes to walk to the Scheffersplein. You can also travel by bus. There is a large bus-stop station located besides the central station of Dordrecht. Many of the buses do stop at the Spuiboulevard located at the edge of the centre. The bus line number 20 is the line which really enters in the downtown area.
