Tobias Schalken (Oss, 1972)
The most recent works of Tobias Schalken concentrate on set-like or scenery objects and installations with an anecdotic character in which a semi-credible or distorted realism is hidden. Very recently his installation My House is not my Home, with a seemingly lifelike naked young man who lies, was shown at the art fair KunstRAI te Amsterdam. To make this installation silicons were used.
Beside his installations the artists is wellknown with his collaboration with his colegeau artists Stefan van Dinther. Together they have made several comic-artbooks with the name Eiland. With these mostly non-spoken stories they try to close the gap between art and comics. In Pictura the artist will in anyway show several of his installations.

Alex Schalken (Rotterdam, 1943).
Father of Tobias and since 1968 a fulltime artist. In the years hereafter Schalken has made his oeuvre of drawings, paintings and objects. Incidentally he occupies graphic design.
As from 1980 he made an annual so-called Exhibition by Mail, with as a special project within this project Tijd Bedaar (1984).
In the Netherlands the works of Alex Schalken has been added in several private collections, government collections and collections of companies.
As from 1999 Schalken organises an every two-year intimate livingroom exposition. At these expositions he show his small format drawings. In Pictura Schalken senior shall show a munber of these drawings. Alexander Schalken strive to make art with 'a great intensity which has not to make you feel safe or at ease or which you can explain' according to his own say. Keywords: enigmatic, multi-interpretable.

Has the comic medium found his way with literature?
This exposition raises a corner of the veil of comic adaptations: how is literature adapted into a comic? And what is the value of these adaptations?

There are good an bad interpretations of literary works. Visitors at this exposition will get a review in about thirty increased boards of past and present European literature in comics; Simenon, Celine, Malet, Bomans, Grame, Reve and many others. Besides the literature you can enjoy the works of some of the best comic artists in this genre, like Matena, Plessix and Tardi.

It started in 1984 with graffiti, in the scene he was especially known for the characters which he drew beside the letters.

He nowadays works as an freelance illustrator for clients like: Veronica [company of broadcasting and television, magazine], Twix, Brainpower [rap artist] and many others. He has made illustrations for Playboy, VPRO gids [magazine of radio and television], Reload, Slam and 4Lux (record label).

One of the strongest points of Cosh are his acrylic paintings.

From very early on Hans could just not stop drawing and painting; during his whole period in school this has left its tracks. In spite of his passion for drawing and painting Hans did decide to follow an education in fysiotherapy. Hans did not finish it. Afterwards he did a number of professions. One of them was a job as a clerk at several courts. The love of drawing and painting always remained present. Meanwhile he joined the art painters association in Maarssen.
 
Nowadays he has had many expositions in several countries. And in 2005 he will have an exposition in Monterey, Californië… The subjects that interest Hans speak for itself and are situated in sunny (French) regions, in almost forgotten times. You will also find history in his art. And cars. Of course. His sometimes bizarre fantasies is being expressed in one-page-comics. He generally works with crayons that can endlessly stand the test of time.

The finale of the comicfestival, with:

• Jeroen de Leijer with the Eefje Wentelteefje show.


Several artists conquer the podium at their very own way. Steven Degryse critises the whole round world with his cartoon Lectrr. Hanco Kolk shows us, with his comic S1ngle, which dilemmas a vacation van bring for a comic character and Hanco will also show the audience that drawing comics is reserved to gods only with his colegeau artist Kees de Boer in ‘the miraculous artist’.
Jeroen de Leijer and Frans van der Meer are the puppeteers of The Eefje Wentelteefje Road Show. This is a 5 meter long installation in which Eefje Wentelteefje will live all kind of bizar adventures with Ferry van de Zaande, her mother, Jan-Jaap-Karel-Kees and many others. All of this will be supported by jingles, videoclips and housebeats and the participation of the public will not be shuned. In short, Strips ON Stage promises to be a true happening.
